Thomas Scott Hutton, 88, of Davenport, Iowa, passed away peacefully on May 4, 2026, at SilverCrest Senior Living. Tom was born in Marion, Iowa, on November 29, 1937, to Hugh and Alice “Genevie” Hutton.

Tom grew up in Marion with his sisters Hazel (Gent), Dorothy (Grenis), and Georgia (Windenburg). He graduated from Marion High School in 1956 and Iowa State Teachers College (now known as the University of Northern Iowa), where he earned his teaching degree. He later earned his master's degree in elementary administration from the University of Missouri. He taught 6th grade in Marshalltown, then was the elementary school principal in Elk Horn, Iowa. He and Sue (Robey), whom he married in 1960, moved their young family to Maquoketa, where he served as an elementary school principal for 16 years, including as the first principal of the new Cardinal Elementary School. He proudly earned the Educator of the Year award from the Iowa Association for Children and Adults with Learning Disabilities for his leadership in starting the special education program in Maquoketa.

He and his second wife, Fran (Thurlow), moved to Las Vegas in 1988, where he taught for 2 years before becoming the principal at Fay Herron Elementary. He retired in 2000. He and Fran moved back to Iowa in 2017 to be closer to their kids and grandkids.

Tom loved sports his entire life. In high school, he played football, basketball, and baseball for the Marion Indians. While principal in Elk Horn, he was an assistant coach and helped the Lady Danes advance to the 6-on-6 girls basketball state tournament. He later became an avid tennis player, played in basketball and softball leagues, and was a very competitive racquetball player. He enjoyed refereeing several high school sports. He often traveled to the Maquoketa area and spent much of that time watching his grandkids and great-grandkids play various sports. After retiring in Las Vegas, he played senior league softball several times a week year-round, and his teams won several “world” championships.

Tom also had a creative side, spending many hours in his shop making things from wood, from model trucks to seasonal yard decorations to decorative gifts for his kids. He built elaborate HO-scale train sets and especially enjoyed making small buildings and creating highly detailed landscapes to bring them to life. He had many collections, including miniature metal and porcelain dogs, metal toy soldiers, coins, glassware, and a unique collection of photos and figures of outhouses. After moving to SilverCrest Senior Living in Davenport, he discovered Legos. He assembled very intricate architectural sets with thousands of pieces, including the Taj Mahal and Notre-Dame de Paris, which were displayed in the dining room at SilverCrest for other residents to enjoy.

Tom is survived by his sons Craig (Brenda), Bruce (Dena), Brian (Becky), and Brent (Shelly); his daughter, Jill Neumann (David); his wife, Fran; and stepsons Chris and Jeff Thurlow. He had 15 grandkids and 13 great-grandkids. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, and his first wife, Sue.

In keeping with Tom’s wishes, no funeral service or celebration of life will be held.
