It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Sabrina Young (b 10.3.1967 - d 5.7.2025), an extraordinary individual who left an indelible mark on the lives of all who knew her. She passed peacefully this morning, surrounded by the compassionate care of her Hospice nurse Nadia.
At 57 years young, her spirit remained unbroken, even as her body failed her after a long health journey. Though she may have been bed bound and under hospice care since December, her heart remained full of joy, love, and wisdom. She was well cared for and free from pain at the time of her passing, a testament to the power of the love and care of the people who surrounded her.
She was preceded in death by her parents Nancy and Robert, and her brother, Justin, yet their love and legacy lived on through her. She is survived by her sister Nicole Landergren, brother-in-law Rob, nephews Sean Landergren (Noni Landergren), Mark, and Daniel Young, niece Cass Young, as well as Adopted Sister Jules Gills (Ian Gills), and a loving community of friends and family who will deeply cherish her memory.
As a lifelong learner and seeker of wisdom, she earned her Associate's degree in English from Blackhawk College, as well as two Bachelor's Degrees (English and History) and a Master's Degree (English Literature) from Western Illinois University. It was during her time at Western that she discovered the joy of lifelong friendships, forming unbreakable bonds with her "soul sisters" Jules, Spring Kuczwara-Hyde, Ann Huffman, and Susan M. Von-Droste. Together, they shared countless moments of laughter, adventure, and personal growth, forging memories that would last a lifetime.
With a heart full of passion and curiosity, she explored the realms of history, genealogy, and medieval Europe, always seeking to learn, grow, and expand her understanding of the world. Her love for Dungeons & Dragons inspired countless hours of creative play, as she delved into the realms of imagination and fantasy. With yarn and hook in hand, she crafted beautiful works of art, creating warmth and comfort for those around her, and generously donating to local animal shelters and homeless outreach organizations. Her compassion and empathy knew no bounds, as she opened her heart and home to those in need, including her beloved furry friends Papi, Isabel, and Max. Though her time with them was fleeting, the memories and love they shared will forever be etched in her heart.
Sabrina's laughter was contagious, her smile radiant, and her spirit unbreakable. She lived life with intention, passion, and purpose, inspiring all who knew her to do the same. As we celebrate her life and legacy, we take comfort in the knowledge that her love, wisdom, and spirit will continue to guide us, even as we mourn her passing.
In the words of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, "Never underestimate the power of a girl with a book." Sabrina's life was a testament to the transformative power of education, compassion, and love. She will be deeply missed, yet her memory will continue to inspire and uplift us, reminding us to live life to the fullest, to love without bounds, and to cherish every moment we share with those around us.
