Robert Eugene Gaunt, affectionately known to many as Dawg, passed away on May 20, 2025, at MercyOne Genesis Medical Center East in Davenport, at the tender age of 58 surrounded by the warmth of those he loved dearly, leaving behind a legacy rich in kindness, adventure, and dedication to others. Born on April 25, 1967, Robert's life was a testament to the courage to change, richness of experience, adventure, and compassion—a manifestation of the virtues he held dear.
Robert was a deeply private man whose caring nature shone brightly in the lives he touched and resonated deeply with those lucky enough to know him. He was known for his selflessness, always ready to lend a helping hand and, on occasion, would give away the very shirt off his back, often wondering later how he would manage without it. His love for nature, racing, and camping brought him immense joy, fueling his adventurous spirit that led him to explore the great outdoors and create lasting memories. Robert's appreciation for life's simple pleasures was exemplified in his hobbies, notably working on diamond art. He took great pride in sharing his creations with friends, further showcasing his generous and thoughtful personality.
Robert's passing is a profound loss for all who knew him. He is welcomed into eternal peace by his parents, Willard Leroy Gaunt and Francis Elaine Barkalow Gaunt, as well as his long-time friend and wife, Susan Kay Lietz Gaunt. Their memories remain a significant part of his legacy.
Robert is survived by daughter, Holly Palmer, and her partner Chris Wright, his brothers Neil, Rick, Stan, Doug, and Steven. He took pride in his role as a grandfather to Luke Husman, Phoenix, and Corey Dyer, and in the laughter of his great-grandchildren, Asher and Brookelyn Dyer. He had a special circle of friends, including Arnie and Marian Hart, who stood by him through thick and thin. He cherished the camaraderie he shared within the close-knit community of his racing family around the Tipton Race Track.
Among Robert's proudest accomplishments was his commitment to sobriety as a member of Alcoholics Anonymous for nearly two decades. Robert also dedicated himself to serving his community, training and serving as a First Responder with the Wilton Volunteer Fire Department, later transferring to the Tipton and then the Lowden Volunteer Fire Departments until health issues necessitated his move to disability. In the realm of creativity, Robert found solace working on diamond art, a pursuit through which he shared his talent and vision with friends, adding sparkles of joy to their live. His personality shone bright, characterized by a rare mix of kindness, humility, and a willingness to make the world around him a better place.
As we honor Robert's memory, we are reminded of the profound impact he had on all who crossed his path. His zest for life, coupled with a heart full of compassion, has etched his name into the annals of our memories forever. Robert's journey does not end here; rather, it transcends into the legacy he leaves behind, permeating the lives of those he loved and those who loved him.
