Paul J. Hammerschmidt, 68, passed away on October 18, 2025, in Davenport, Iowa after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Fargo, N.D., on December 19, 1956, Paul spent his formative years in Davenport, where he also completed his primary and high school education. He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1987 with a degree in Civil Engineering.

Paul dedicated 37 years to Vanguard Distributing and 7G, primarily serving as a Warehouse Manager. Even after retiring, Paul’s commitment to his work saw him returning part-time, driven by his strong work ethic and dedication.

Paul cherished time with his family and friends. An avid supporter of the Iowa Hawkeyes, he enjoyed both football and basketball. Paul’s musical tastes were broad with a particular fondness for The Allman Brothers Band. Paul relished fishing, a hobby that matched his calm and patient temperament. He also enjoyed riding RAGBRAI for many years.

Paul is survived by his sister, Joni Hammerschmidt; nieces, Caitlin (Marty) Krikorian and Rachel (Chris) Telfer; nephews, Chris (Maj) McKinley, Jerome Paulos; and four great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leatrice and Jerome Hammerschmidt; sisters, Mary (Ben) Hammerschmidt, Patti Hammerschmidt; and nephew, Aaron McKinley.

At Paul’s request, cremation was performed by Mississippi Valley Cremation and Direct Burial, a sister company of Wendt Funeral Home in Moline, Ill. A memorial celebration will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Kings Harvest Pet Rescue at 21110 Holden Drive, Davenport, IA 52806. This gesture honors Paul’s compassionate spirit and love for animals.

Family and friends are invited to share memories and express condolences on his memory page at mvcremation.com.
