Marion David
Darling
August 25, 1945 – April 25, 2026
Marion David Darling, a devoted family man, esteemed Army veteran, and accomplished professional, passed away peacefully at his home on April 25, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones. Born on August 25, 1945, in Santa Clara, California, Marion lived a life marked by service, dedication, and a big heart that continuously sought to care for those around him.
Marion’s journey began with a strong foundation in education, graduating from Shelbina High School in Missouri in 1953. He further pursued his passions by attending Barber College and Motorcycle Mechanic Trades School, equipping him with diverse skills that would define his multifaceted career. His professional life spanned several vocations—including roles as a medical corpsman, barber, mechanic, owner-operator truck driver, and proprietor of Darling Trucking—demonstrating a tireless work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit.
His military service was distinguished and honorable. Marion enlisted in the United States Army in October 1965 and served until 1967, stationed at the 7th Field Hospital in Japan where he served as an Army Medic, among other responsibilities. Answering the call once more, he re-enlisted in 1980 and served until 1985, during which time he was stationed at Wiesbaden, Germany. There, he was joined by his cherished wife and daughter, forming a close-knit family unit amidst his service. Marion earned numerous accolades for his valor and proficiency, including the Expert Infantryman Badge, Marksman distinctions with M-14 and M-16 rifles, Sharpshooter, and Expert recognition in hand grenades. His collection of medals is a testament to his commitment and excellence: two Good Conduct Medals, National Defense Service Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon with Numeral 2, Overseas Service Ribbon, and Army Service and Achievement Ribbon. Notably, he graduated with honors at PNCOC/CA and received the Leadership Award at A Company, 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry, culminating in his retirement from the Army in 1985.
Outside of his professional and military achievements, Marion was an avid outdoorsman who found joy in spending time immersed in nature. His talents extended to working on cars, but above all, he treasured moments spent with his loving family, particularly his grandchildren, who brought immense happiness to his life.
Marion is survived by his devoted wife, Karen Sue Darling, who stood faithfully by his side. He is lovingly remembered by his children—Carrie (Rob) Toppert, Jolene (Jason) Walter, Joleen (Charles) Rasso, and Kelly (Kenny) Temple—as well as several grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and even a few great-great-grandchildren who carry forward his legacy. His siblings Eleanor (Darling) Smoot, DeForest “Buzz” (Gerry) Darling, John (Charlotte) Darling, and Tim Darling survive him, along with many nieces and nephews who hold his memory dear.
Marion was preceded in death by his parents, his twin brother and sister who tragically passed at birth, and his son, Barry Riddell.
A man of great integrity, generosity, and compassion, Marion David Darling’s life was one of unwavering dedication to family, country, and community. His enduring spirit and the warmth of his heart will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know him.
