Karon Kerest, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away on March 4, 2026, at her home in Bettendorf, Iowa, surrounded by her loving family. She was 78 years old. Born on December 13, 1947, in Davenport, Iowa, Karon was the daughter of John "Pete" and Marie (Lawler) Johnson. She carried the values instilled by her parents throughout her life. There will be a Celebration of Life at a later date
Karon dedicated over 32 years of her professional life to the Rock Island Arsenal, where she made lasting contributions and formed meaningful connections with her colleagues. Her retirement marked the beginning of a new chapter, allowing her to fulfill her passion for travel. Karon visited many beautiful places, including the stunning landscapes of Hawaii, the breathtaking wilderness of Alaska, and the rich culture of Ireland. These experiences brought her immense joy and formed cherished memories that she shared with her family.
Her education laid a strong foundation for her future endeavors. Karon graduated from Assumption High School and further pursued her studies at Marycrest College and St. Ambrose University. Throughout her life, she valued learning and personal growth.
Karon is survived by her loving daughter, Heather (Vaughn) Fuller; her son, Jason Kerest; and her grandchildren Kevin Galbraith Jr, Nathan Galbraith, Shayna (Dylan) Caulkins, and Shyanne (Tylin Hall) Fuller. Additionally, she leaves behind 11 great-grandchildren, her sister, Rita Johnson, 8 nieces and nephews, and many cousins who held a special place in her heart.
Karon was preceded in death by her parents, John "Pete" and Marie Johnson, and her brothers, Dr. Robert and Dr. Gerald Johnson. The legacy of love and warmth she leaves behind will be felt by all who knew her. Karon Kerest will be remembered for her kindness, her spirit of adventure, and the unwavering love she showered upon her family and friends. Her memory will live on in the stories shared by those she touched throughout her life.
