In Loving Memory of Karen M. (Godsil) Patrick

Karen, a devoted Mother, Grammy, sister, daughter, community historian, and friend to all, passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of her family on Thursday, March 12, 2026. She was preceded in death by her loving mother, Jean, and her oldest brother, Michael.

Born as the fourth of ten children to Michael and Mary Jean Sparks Godsil, Karen’s life was defined by her deep roots and her even deeper capacity to care for others. She pursued her education at Carl Sandburg College, obtaining her Associate Degree and developing skills that she would later use to serve her community in various capacities. While she spent time as a dedicated paraprofessional at Lombard Middle School, her professional heart truly belonged to the Galesburg Railroad Museum, where she served for many years with distinction as Curator. Karen possessed an extensive knowledge of Galesburg’s railroad heritage. More than just a keeper of facts, she had a rare gift for storytelling, bringing history to life for every visitor who walked through the Museum doors. Her passion for the rails was surpassed only by her devotion to her family. Beyond her career, she was also a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, where she taught CCD for a time.

Karen was the proud Mother of four daughters: Megan (Derek), Jennifer (Curtis), Tawny, & Brittany; a doting Grammy to nine: Madi, Drew, Naomi, Alicia, Kameren, Braylinn, Miles, Jorden, & Maycee; and a beloved Grammy to her great-grandchildren. She was a constant, active presence in their lives—there was truly nothing she would not do for all of them. Whether she was sewing custom clothing, pillows, and blankets, or hand-delivering dinners to her grandchildren during their work breaks, her love was tangible and tireless. Her large family also blessed her with many in-laws, nieces, and nephews, for whom she expressed that same tireless love.

In the kitchen, Karen was an exceptional baker, famous for her peanut butter bars & cream puffs. In the home, she was a master of organization and a meticulous cleaner, creating an environment as warm & welcoming as her personality.

Beyond her family, Karen had the unique ability to offer encouragement to complete strangers. She was known for her positive words and the captivating stories she shared with everyone she met. She was a presence that will be missed deeply by all who were fortunate enough to know her.

The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the entire OSF Hospice Team for the exceptional care, time, and genuine love they provided to both Karen and her family during her final days.

Cremation will be directed by Mississippi Valley Cremation and Direct Burial, 1811 15th Street Place, Moline, IL. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date, and memorials can be made to The Galesburg Railroad Museum (211 S. Seminary St., Galesburg) in memory of Karen Patrick.

Family and friends are invited to share memories and express condolences on her memory page at www.mvcremation. com.
