John Mathias Shields, 63, of Durant, IA, passed away on Friday, July 4, 2025, at his residence.
John Shields was born on New Year’s Day, 1962, to John D. and Mary Ellen Shields in Maquoketa, Iowa, earning the special distinction of being the county’s New Year’s Baby at Jackson County Public Hospital.
He graduated from North Scott High School in 1980 and worked as a skilled meat cutter before health issues led to an early retirement.
On October 8, 1988, John married Deborah Andersen. Though the marriage later ended, they shared the joy of raising two sons together: Michael Shields and John Shields Jr. He was also a proud father figure to two stepsons, James and Scott Andersen.
John had a deep appreciation for the outdoors and spent many happy days camping and fishing with his father and sons. A lifelong racing enthusiast, he loved dirt track stock car races and was a devoted NASCAR fan. Sundays often found him cheering on the Minnesota Vikings with unwavering loyalty.
Animals held a special place in John’s heart. Over the years, he cared for many beloved pets, but none were more cherished than his loyal companion Cassie, who remained by his side until his final moments.
John was preceded in death by his father, John D. Shields. He is survived by his mother, Mary Ellen Shields; his sisters, Christine France and Debra Breitbach; his sons, Michael and John Jr.; and his stepsons, James and Scott. He will be remembered for his quiet strength, his love for family, and his big heart.
