After graduating from Rock Island High School in 1950, she completed a course in secretarial and accounting at the Moline Institute of Commerce. She also attended the University of Illinois, Undergraduate Division in Chicago, and took several accounting classes at Blackhawk College in Moline. In 1951, she began her career doing secretarial and bookkeeping work, eventually becoming an accountant. She had also worked as a tax preparer since the early 1950s, preparing both corporate and individual tax returns. She finally retired in 2015, when her eyesight began to fail her at the age of 82.

Helen was united in marriage to Harry T. Walker, March 18, 1958. They moved to Big Island, Milan, IL in 1959. In 1976, their marriage ended, and she chose to remain single.

She loved her home on Big Island and lived there for 65 years until her move to Bickford Home in September 2024.

Helen wants to be remembered foremost as a faithful worshiper of Jehovah God, devoted to her five children and their families, as well as her spiritual family within Jehovah's Witnesses congregations throughout the area. Helen's family and friends will always have fond memories of her unconditional love, her kind and generous ways for those in need, her sense of humor, her positive and humble attitude, and her independent spirit. Helen really enjoyed volunteering her time to share God's message from the Bible with others. She also had a great love of reading and learning. She lived a long, happy, full life on her terms. She was truly a lovely lady.
