Gilbert Carl Pewe Jr., age 78, of Dixon, Iowa, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at Genesis Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf, Iowa, following a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Gilbert was born on July 17th, 1947, in Clinton, Iowa, to Gilbert Carl Sr. and Yvonne Eileen (Synder) Pewe. He was one of nine children. Gilbert attended Wheatland School and graduated in 1965. After graduation, he began his career with Caterpillar Inc. in Mt. Joy, Iowa, before later pursuing farming and, most notably, a career in truck driving—a profession that reflected his strong work ethic and love for the open road.
On March 24th, 1990, Gilbert married the love of his life, Susan (Horstmann) Pewe. Together, they raised one son, Cameron (Haley) Pewe of Castlewood, South Dakota. Gilbert was also the proud father of two daughters, Trisia (Bill) Sedam and Tracey (Tom) O’Brien of Moline, Illinois. He was further blessed with two stepchildren, Tony (Tammy) Dahms of Dixon, Iowa, and Kristina Scroggins (Jeff) of Wheatland, Iowa.
Gilbert was known for his quick wit, unique personality, and genuine friendliness. He had a gift for conversation and could strike up a discussion with anyone about anything, making friends wherever he went. Gilbert’s approachable nature and easy smile left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
In his free time, Gilbert enjoyed fishing, camping, playing cards, helping friends with their farming, and taking trips to visit his son, where he especially enjoyed watching cattle and spending time with his cherished grandchildren, Cora and Colt Pewe.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Susan; his brothers Eldon (Suann), Kyle (Marilyn), and Robin (Teresa); a special sister-in-law, Regina (Vander Heiden) Pewe; He also leaves behind beloved grandchildren: Cora and Colt Pewe, Myles and Reese Rawsthorne, Christopher (Kelsey) Dahms, Nathan, Tyler, and Michael Sedam, Jasmine (Dan) Carr, and Matthew (Susan) O’Brien; as well as great-grandchildren Cale and Emersyn Dahms, Keagan, Noah, Savannah, and Ryan.
