Gary Connell, Sr., 85, passed away peacefully at his home in Davenport, IA, on September 2, 2026. He was born on March 11, 1941, in Dubuque, IA, to Wayne and Virginia (Reuter) Connell.
Gary served his country honorably in the United States Army from 1959 to 1963 during the Cuban Crisis and was stationed at Fort Knox, KY. Following his military service, he pursued a career in management with a prominent grocery chain in Las Vegas, NV, where he dedicated many years of hard work until his retirement in 2002.
Gary had a deep appreciation for the simple joys of life. In retirement, he delighted in fishing, woodworking, stone carving, country western dancing, and traveling in his RV. These pastimes brought him great joy and fulfillment.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Wayne and Virginia Connell, and his brother, Jimmie Lee Connell.
Gary is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Vickie (Reeves) Connell, whom he married on November 21, 1975. He leaves behind a large and loving family, including his sons David (Adonna) Connell, Jason Connell, Gary Connell II, and Richard Connell; daughters Dennielle de Heras (Matt), Tammi (Paul) Bingham, and Deana (Greg) Urig. He is also survived by his sisters Linda (Mike) Bowker, Debbie Connell, Beth (Mike) Lambert, and Jody (Terry) Spurrier; brothers Ron (Rose) Connell and Tim (Edith) Connell. His legacy includes 18 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at Sacred Heart Cathedral, 422 East 10th Street, Davenport, IA. A graveside service with military honors will follow at Rock Island Arsenal National Cemetery. A Celebration of Life luncheon will take place at the American Legion, 702 West 35th Street, Davenport, IA, following the graveside service.
Gary will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family, his service to his country, and his joyful embrace of life's adventures. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
