Listen to Obituary

Gail Ellen Staples, nee Dawson, 71, of Moline, IL, passed away Monday, June 23, 2025, at home with her family. Survived by her husband, Patrick Staples, of 46 years, her daughter Jessica, and son Peter. Born in Evergreen Park Illinois, Gail grew up with 5 siblings, Clyde, Donna, Tim, Stan and Mike. Her close, loving family unit spent their childhood on the family boat and on the beach. She met Patrick in 1973 in a dorm elevator. They both had long hair, a good sense of humor, and a love of music. She started teaching Special Ed in 1977, which she did for 16 years, before moving to the first grade for the balance of her 40-year career. She taught with a singular passion and commitment. Gail possessed great empathy and was gifted at nurturing young minds. She retired in 2013 from George O Barr in Silvis, Illinois.

One of the most important days in her life was when she first became a mother to Jessica. Being a mother, wife, and teacher were the three most meaningful things to her.

She loved collecting shells on the beach. Her favorite desserts were key lime pie and mint chocolate chip ice cream. She was a fierce defender of anyone in her care and loved watching the flowers bloom in her garden each spring.

Gail and her family were so grateful for her team at Unity Point Cancer Center. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. A celebration of life gathering will be announced later in the summer.

Family and friends are invited to share memories and condolences on her memory wall at mvcremation.com.
