Gail Renae (Berry) Vander Esch, age 55, of Rock Island, IL, peacefully joined Jesus on September 8, 2026, at UnityPoint Health - Trinity Rock Island after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born on September 15, 1970, in Bettendorf, Iowa, Gail was the cherished daughter of John D. Berry and Betty Jo Hodges. She grew up alongside her beloved sister, Tina, and was known for her boundless love of animals, art, and music. A talented pianist and flutist, Gail's creativity shone brightly through her award-winning artwork during her time at Bettendorf High School, from which she graduated in 1989.
Gail's adventurous spirit led her to explore the vast beauty of the country, often finding solace under the stars. Her generous heart touched everyone she met. She was the birth mother of Chloe Renae, who was lovingly adopted by Gail’s sister, Tina, at six weeks old.
Gail was preceded in death by her parents, John David Berry and Betty Jo Hodges, earlier this year, Gail leaves behind her sister Tina Craig; her beloved niece/daughter Chloe Renae; her stepmother Mary Berry; her stepbrother James Freeman and his wife Val; her stepsisters Carrie Monroe and Kimberly Blank, as well as many cousins and extended family members who mourn her deeply.
In a touching tribute, Tina reflects on her sister’s gentle journey to rest:
"God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be, so He put His arms around you and whispered, 'Come to Me.' With tearful eyes Chloe and I watched you pass away. A golden heart stopped beating, a kind soul put to rest. God broke our hearts to prove He only takes the best."
