Douglas Wayne Zickuhr of Bettendorf, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at home surrounded by the love of his family after a lengthy battle with dementia and Parkinson’s.
Doug was born on December 26, 1945, in Dubuque, Iowa. His parents were Vern and Dorothy Zickuhr. Doug lived an amazing life. He gave everything he had to everything he did. Among his wonderful life experiences, he competed in hundreds of triathlons, including multiple Ironman triathlons. Biking was one of Doug’s loves: a passion he shared with two of his dearest friends, Bruce Nelson and Jean Kelly. At 72 years old, Doug completed the first half of TOMRV with his daughter, a whopping 110 miles on the bike from the Quad Cities to Dubuque. In his earlier years, he held many trick ski and slalom water ski records, including a 182-mile nonstop trek where he was blessed to have his dad drive the boat. Doug was also a professional snow ski instructor with an amazing talent for teaching blind people to ski.
Without a doubt, Doug‘s pride and joy is his kids. His tank never ran out when it came to them and their lives. He always had time for them- from coaching their sports, to cheering them on, to giving advice, and to just listening. From his son’s wrestling matches, to basketball games, to his daughter’s countless softball tournaments - he never even missed a school mile. He enjoyed his daily devotional times with Dax and Chad, and Jake was the only one to keep him clean-shaven. Nothing he looked forward to more than AJ taking him to Starbucks!
He was a man of God and stressed the importance of having a relationship with our savior, Jesus, for he knew someday this day would come. In July of 1995, Doug married Joleen Irish. She was truly the love of his life. Up until the very end, she was always his favorite person and number one priority. They started their family and were blessed with 4 children who rapidly became their world. Doug is survived by his wife Joleen, daughter Alexis Sharp, & son in law Cameron, his sons, Jake Zickuhr, Dax Zickuhr, and Chad Zickuhr, and 6 grandchildren.
Doug is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Bob, and his daughter Tracy.
Doug’s family would like to express their gratitude to the hospice nurses at Genesis for their compassion and kindness.
