Douglas "Doug" Mitten
March 24, 1956 – June 18, 2026
Doug shared his creativity, kindness, generosity, and unique perspective with everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Douglas "Doug" Mitten, 70, of Moline, Illinois, passed away on June 18, 2026, at Allure of the Quad Cities in Moline. Cremation will be directed by Mississippi Valley Cremation and Direct Burial, Moline, Illinois.
Doug was born on March 24, 1956, in Kankakee, Illinois. Throughout his life, he shared his creativity, kindness, generosity, and unique perspective with everyone fortunate enough to know him.
A deeply artistic man, Doug loved drawing, photography, cooking, and playing the piano. Although he never learned to read sheet music, he possessed an extraordinary gift: he could hear a song and then sit down at the piano and play it beautifully by ear. Music was one of the many ways he connected with the world around him.
Doug was also a talented high school athlete who excelled in track and field, earning numerous awards during his school years. He was honored with the “Best Build” award in high school, a reflection of both his athletic ability and his presence during those formative years.
Doug had an exceptional eye for beauty and detail. He noticed things that others often missed—the glow of a sunset reflected in a drop of dew, the subtle colors in nature, and the special moments hidden in everyday life. Photography became a way for him to capture and share that beauty with others, allowing them to see the world through his creative lens.
He was also known for bringing people together through food. Doug loved cooking, especially Italian cuisine, and took great pride in baking homemade bread. A true connoisseur of fine cheeses, he also enjoyed crafting thoughtful charcuterie boards to share with family and friends. Friends and family continue to rave about his famous white chicken chili and garlic bread, meals made with care and shared with love. Whether preparing a holiday meal, experimenting with a new recipe, or assembling a carefully curated spread, Doug found joy in nourishing others and creating moments of connection around the table.
Doug cherished holidays, especially Halloween, and found joy in making others feel special. He remembered birthdays, paid attention to the little details that mattered, and had a remarkable ability to make people feel seen, appreciated, and loved. He loved fiercely and wholeheartedly, and those fortunate enough to be part of his life never had to question how deeply they meant to him.
Doug had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to laugh. He was a funny man with a deep, unmistakable belly laugh that could fill a room and lift the spirits of everyone around him. His laughter was contagious and brought joy into even the simplest moments.
Those who knew Doug knew they could count on him. He was always willing to help someone in need, offer support during difficult times, or quietly provide for others without expecting anything in return. His kindness was genuine, his heart was generous, and his impact on the lives of others was profound.
Doug is survived by his son, Chris Mitten; his daughter, Courtney Mitten, DNP (Brian Augustine); his beloved grandchildren, Christopher Mitten, Stellan Augustine, and Theo Augustine; his former wife and cherished lifelong friend, Teresa Francis-Tourney (Lisa Tourney), with whom he continued to share a deep platonic love, friendship, and devotion until the end; his siblings, Evanna Zaiss, Tammy Mitten, and Eric Mitten; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who loved him dearly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald Mitten and Mary Mitten.
Doug will be remembered for his artistic spirit, his thoughtful heart, his ability to find beauty in the smallest details, and the love, humor, and kindness he shared so freely with others. His memory will live on in the photographs he captured, the music he played, the meals he prepared, and the countless lives he touched.
A celebration of Doug’s life will be held on Saturday, June 27th. Visitation will take place from 2:00–4:00 p.m., followed by a service at 4:00 p.m., at Wendt Funeral Home, 1811 15th St Pl, Moline, IL 61265.

He will be deeply missed and forever loved.
