Donald L.
Ballard Jr.
March 25, 1960 – March 14, 2026
Donald L. Ballard Jr., fondly known as Donnie, peacefully passed away on March 14, 2026, in Morrison, Illinois, after bravely facing prior health issues. Born on March 25, 1960, in Elgin, Illinois, Donnie’s life was a testament to kindness, dedication, and the joy of helping others.
Donnie was a 1979 graduate of Erie High School in Illinois and later pursued his passion for craftsmanship by attending Kirkwood Community College, where he proudly completed a CDC Machinist apprenticeship—an achievement he cherished deeply throughout his life. His career journey was marked by diligence and a spirit of service; he worked with Procter & Gamble, Hawkeye Trucking, and Inntagrade DNA Technology. Even after retiring three years ago, Donnie’s heart continued to lead him to meaningful work as he took on the role of a school bus driver for Scenic Stage Line. Driving children to various sporting events, he found great joy in nurturing young minds and witnessing their growth and achievements.
Donnie was a man of immense compassion. He devoted much of his life to helping people, especially the elderly, to whom he offered unwavering support and kindness. His big heart extended to animals as well, reflecting his gentle soul and deep empathy. Among his countless interests were camping, fishing, hunting, and riding his bike—activities through which he embraced the beauty of nature and the importance of family and friendships. His love for these pastimes showed his zest for life and the simple joys that he held dear.
He is lovingly remembered by his mother, Linda Ballard of Prophetstown, Illinois, and his children: son Cole (Sandra) Ballard of Maricopa, Arizona, and daughter Alex of Swisher, Iowa. Donnie’s legacy continues vibrantly through his granddaughters, Chloe and Arya of Maricopa, who brought light and laughter into his life. He also leaves behind his cherished sisters Cheryl (Rod) Mills of Morrison, Wanda (Brian) McCubbin of Tiffin, Iowa, and Jill (Myron) Zuidema of Morrison, Illinois. Throughout his life, Donnie shared a special bond with his dear friend Peppi Allen, whose friendship stood as a testament to his warm spirit.
Donald was predeceased by his father, Donald Ballard Sr., and his beloved dog, Daisy Mae—companions whose memories he carried in his heart always.
Donnie’s life was one marked by gentle strength and unfailing kindness. He gave so much to those around him, whether by lending a helping hand or simply being present with a smile. As a school bus driver, a devoted son, brother, father, grandfather, and friend, his impact was profound and deeply felt by all who knew him. He will be remembered not only for his proudest accomplishment—the machinist apprenticeship that underscored his commitment and skill—but also for the warmth and compassion that defined who he was.
Though we mourn the loss of Donnie, we also celebrate the rich tapestry of his life—a life lived with generosity, dedication, and love. His spirit will forever remain in the hearts of his family and friends, a guiding light of kindness and the enduring power of a big heart. May Donald L. Ballard Jr. rest in peace, knowing he was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed.
