Dennis Hougard, a beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 1, 2026, at his home in Rock Island. Born on November 30, 1948, in Washington State, he lived a life filled with purpose, service, and love.
Dennis proudly served in the U.S. military during the Vietnam War, where he received several medals for his commitment and bravery. His service instilled in him a profound sense of duty, which translated into his later roles in the community. He devoted much of his time as the director of the food pantry and the director of ministry outreach in 29 Palms, California. His efforts touched many lives, showcasing his unwavering dedication to helping those in need.
Outside of his service and community work, Dennis enjoyed a variety of hobbies that brought him joy and fulfillment. He found solace in breeding canaries, which filled his home with their delightful songs. His passion for collecting coins reflected his appreciation for history and craftsmanship. Additionally, fishing allowed him quiet time to connect with nature, providing him with a favorite retreat from daily life.
Dennis is survived by his loving wife, Mary Hougard; his daughter, Sara, and son-in-law Brandt Lapschies, along with their three children; his daughter, Audrie, and son-in-law Bryan Peterson and their two children; his son Jacob and daughter-in-law Evelyn Wink; and his son Justin and daughter-in-law Cassie Clark and their two children. He is also survived by his sisters, Marlene Hougard Mendoza and Debbie Collins.
Dennis Hougard will be remembered for his compassion, his commitment to service, and the love he shared with his family and friends. His legacy lives on through the lives he touched and the memories he created with those who knew him.
