Dawn
Higgins
January 10, 1966 – May 7, 2026
Dawn Higgins, affectionately known as "Mema," peacefully passed away on May 7, 2026, in Milan, Illinois, after a courageous and intense battle with cancer. Born on January 10, 1966, in Aurora, Illinois, Dawn's journey through life was marked by an extraordinary blend of kindness, generosity, and spirited joy that touched all who knew her.
Dawn was a beacon of compassion and strength for everyone around her. Regardless of what anyone was going through at any time, she could be counted on to show up with unwavering support. Whether offering tough love or constructive criticism, she led with a heart full of love and empathy, gently assuring those in her care that everything would be manageable. Her ability to mix sincere warmth with her trademark sarcastic humor created a welcoming space for all who crossed her path. Her personality was a rare and beautiful combination: the sweetest person you could ever meet, yet fiercely loyal and protective to those she loved.
Dawn’s presence was a comfort and a shield; when she was on your side, it meant the world. She carried this spirit in every interaction, embracing everyone with open arms and a heart full of compassion. Dawn’s life was rich with moments shared with family, friends, and her beloved dogs. She found joy in traveling to new places, the thrill of motorcycle rides, the cool freedom of swimming, and the soul-lifting energy of live music. Her laughter, genuine and full-bodied, was a soundtrack to countless cherished memories.
She was a most loving and proud mother to her sons, Mark Carleton, Anthony Higgins, and Nick Carleton. As “Mema,” she held a special place in the hearts of her grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and all the children whose lives she so lovingly supported over the years. Beyond bloodlines, she was a maternal figure, a guiding light, and a steadfast supporter—a gift to all who were fortunate enough to be part of her extended family.
Dawn’s immediate family includes her sister, Tracy Higgins, her brother, Tim Higgins, and her partner, Cleat Anderson, who shared in her life’s journey with deep love and companionship.
She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Pamela and Terry Higgins, whose legacy lived on in the warmth and strength she carried forward. Dawn Higgins will be deeply missed but forever remembered as a kind, generous, and fun-loving spirit who showed compassion, led with love, and lifted others through both laughter and support. Her legacy is one of unwavering devotion, heartfelt guidance, and a reminder that life, even in its most difficult moments, can be met with grace and resilience.
Rest in peace, Dawn. Your light will continue to shine in the hearts of all who loved you.
