David
Dickerson
November 21, 1957 – March 20, 2026
David Charles Dickerson, 68, of Rock Island, Illinois, passed away on March 20, 2026. He was born on November 21, 1957, in Kankakee, IL
David graduated from Rock Island High School in 1975, where he distinguished himself as a highly ranked member of the tennis team. He attended Western Illinois University before transferring to the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he earned his degree and later a master’s in East Asian Studies.
In the early 1980s, David moved to Japan, where he built a remarkable life and career. A dedicated and respected educator, he taught at a private high school and served as Chair of the English Department. He was deeply committed to his students, coaching tennis six to seven days a week and transforming the school’s program into one of distinction. Under his leadership, the team achieved a #1 ranking in its prefecture, and several of his players went on to play professionally in Japan.
David was a lifelong learner, philosopher, and world traveler. His curiosity led him across much of Asia, including a year spent living in India after he graduated from college. He spoke three languages and often shared that India and the Philippines were among his favorite places in the world.
After retiring in 2017, David purchased the home in which he was raised and divided his time between Japan and the United States. In 2023, he returned to Rock Island, where he found peace in nature, especially at Black Hawk State Historic Site and Loud Thunder Forest Preserve.
David is survived by his brother, Gregg Dickerson (Sharon), and his sister, Jill Dickerson; his nieces, Kristy Honiotes, Nicole (Brandon) Colvin, Kelsi (Travis) Thomson, Emily Schwass, Lauren (Ben) Panock, and Kaley Schwass; and five great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore Dickerson and Joyce (Bowman) Dickerson.
In accordance with his wishes, no services will be held. David’s life may be honored through quiet reflection, time spent in nature, and a continued curiosity about the world he so deeply valued. “The body dies, but the spirit that transcends it cannot be touched by death.” — Ramana Maharshi
