Beverly Mae Simkins (née Hol), age 88, passed away peacefully on December 29, surrounded by family. She was born on August 4, 1937, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, to John and Waunita Hol. Bev graduated from Davenport High School in 1955 and the St. Luke’s nursing program. She worked as a nurse and fierce advocate for elder-care for many decades, positively impacting the lives of her patients. During her career, Bev was the director of nursing of the Masonic Care Facility in Bettendorf, Iowa. She was also a state of Iowa nursing home inspector and the 2000 Surveyor of the Year award recipient.
She married David Edward Simkins on December 26, 1958. The couple were proud and loving parents to four daughters: Tammy (Mike) Zimmer of DeWitt, Iowa; Cindy (Mike) Cooper of Crystal River, Fla.; Lori (Brian) Maleski of Rockton, Pa.; and Carla (Gary) Hoover of Hyde, Pa. She deeply cherished her family and was blessed with 14 grandchildren and more than 20 great-grandchildren, each of whom brought her great joy. She loved sewing, crocheting, and quilting; weekly family dinners; and baking Christmas cookies with her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Dave, and her sister and brother-in-law, Dolores and Bud Dillon. She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Patricia and Carl Schmidt of Eldridge, Iowa, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Bev will be remembered for her feisty spirit, caring heart, and the many lives she touched, both personally and professionally. Her memory will live on through the generations she loved and nurtured.
Cremation will be directed by Mississippi Valley Cremation. She will be laid to rest at the Rock Island National Cemetery.
